Known for his out-of-the box art projects, Genco Gülan, this time, emerges with his multicolored paintings. Saturated with reds, yellows, greens, blues and oranges, these canvases are quite unusual in their dimensions. In the series titled “Biometric Paintings,”contemporary artist Genco Gülan synthesizes the tradition of abstract expressionist painting with the conceptual art approach.

In its broad sense, the term “biometry” corresponds to the systems that compute human biological data with the purpose of identification. Previously Gülan employed biometry in his photography and the resulting art works were exhibited in Rotterdam. His second artistic application of biometry includes smearing of his hands in paint and creating a series of paintings without the use of a brush.

In “Biometric Paintings”, rather than increasing the sizes of his canvases, he experiments with the methods of downsizing them. When the surfaces of perception become increasingly limited to the size of the smart phones, how does one preserve the effect of the paint? How does the paint compete with the new technologies? How can the white canvas overcome the blue screen? These are the questions Gülan keeps in mind.

With these new canvases, the artist flirts with and makes passes at Pop Art, but the references are credited respectively to Sarkis, Damien Hirst and Yves Klein. Transformed by Gülan’s rendition, the works raise their hats to Sarkis’s golden touches, Hirst’s “Dot Paintings'' and Yves Klein’s “Antropometria.” The colorful yet political stance makes Gülan’s works unique.

Produced by Erdal Atahan, the exhibition takes place at a drugstore, again paying homage to Damien Hirst and his famous exhibition “Pharmacy.”

Genco Gülan lives and works in İzmir and İstanbul. His works are in the collections of numerous museums in his native country and worldwide.
